Coins for Classrooms
Our school has raised $5,584.20 for classrooms in need.  Our class raised $389.42.  Thank you for your generosity.  I know the money will go to good use in rebuilding classrooms in the areas devastated by the hurricane.  As a result of our class having raised the most money in 3rd grade, we get to have a spooky flashlight reading in the library next month.  Fun!!!

Practice Spelling Test
On the weeks that we have our practice spelling tests, I have a meeting on Fridays during specials.  This means that I have no time to grade the tests to give back to the students before the end of the day. I let the kids vote on how they wanted to handle this -- take the practice test on Thursday and get the graded test that afternoon or take the practice test on Friday and get the graded test on Monday.  They voted to take the practice test on Thursday.  The regular test will still be given on Friday.  So... our practice test this week is Thursday.

Mixtures
Thank you so much for signing up to send donations for our mixtures project.  If you didn't get a chance to sign up for something and still would like to donate, just choose something and send it in.  It will need to be a dry-type food that can easily be mixed with other things, but also be separated from the mix.  We need all donations on or before October 2.  Thanks!!!

Homework Packets
This has been the first year that we (third grade teachers) have not put a reading log on the front of the homework packet.  I don't think this is working for our class, so beginning October 6 our packet will have a reading log on the front.  The reading log will be where students write down their reading for the week.  It will also contain the spelling words for the week and any important dates that are coming up.  I think this might work better for us.

News and Updates

PTA
Please join us for our first PTA meeting in the cafeteria on Tuesday, September 12th at 6:00pm - we will have a brief meeting and then officially kick off the year for all of our Homeroom Parents, Volunteers and Watch DOGS.  Bring the whole family - in the gym we will be showing the Trolls movie and have a fun craft for the kiddos.  The PTA will also have free pizza and lemonade for all our members who attend!  Please help us plan by responding here - we hope to see you on Tuesday!

Note -- you do not have to be a member of the PTA in order to be part of the directory.  This is the place where you can get in touch with other families at Forest Creek.

Coins for Classrooms
Students are encouraged to bring COINS FOR CLASSROOMS to be given to Donors Choose for schools in the Houston area. Our campus goal is to send $2000! That’s about $2.25 per student. Please send any coins you’d like to donate to FCE in an envelope/baggie with the amount included and teacher name on it. The classroom that has the most donations will win “Flashlight Reading” in the library.

Writing Club
Writing Club-Forest Creek’s Writing Club for students in 2nd-5th grade will begin on Monday, Sept. 11 after school at 2:55. Writing Club will be every OTHER Monday If your child is staying after school, please send a note or email your teacher stating the way that he/she will go home at 4:00.

Writing Club will meet in Mrs. Crochet’s music room immediately after school then go to the library to write.  All 2nd-5th graders are welcome. Bring a journal or notebook, a pencil, and your creative ideas!

Service Learning ClubDo you like to help others? Do you want to make a difference in the lives of other people? You should join our FCE Service Club. Service Club will begin on Monday, Sept. 18 after school at 2:55.  Service Club will alternate with Writing Club and will be on every OTHER Monday.  Please send a note or email to your child's teacher giving the student permission to stay and stating how they will go home.

In Service Club, the children plan, lead, and participate in service learning projects for our school.  After school, we will meet in  Mrs. Crochet's music room, then we will go to Mrs. Bartholomew’s room.   All 4th and 5th graders are welcome. Come help us, help others!

Lunch money
When your child brings money for lunch or breakfast, remind them to stop by the cafeteria in the morning before they come to class to deposit the money in their account.  The cafeteria staff appreciates the money being turned in before lunch time so the line doesn't slow down because of that.

Restroom
Please encourage your child to stop by the restroom on their way to class in the morning.

Tardy Bell
The tardy bell rings at 7:40.  Students must be in the classroom when the bell rings or they will receive a tardy.  They can not just be in the building; they must be in the classroom.

Agenda
Please make sure you check your child's agenda.  We will begin writing in it daily to get in the habit of doing it.  We will put in assignments and when they are due.  We will also include special dates to remember.  Also, students should be recording their reading (20 minutes each day for 4 days per week).  I will be looking at this periodically beginning next week.

February 3, 2017

Here are some things that are happening in 3rd grade.

Inventor Living Museum
Yesterday, your student brought home a letter regarding our Living Museum that will happen on March 2.  Your student will be researching an inventor/innovator.  Each student will present the information they gather at the living museum.  Each student will be required to have some sort of prop to go with the speech that they will prepare in class.  Students will need to practice their speech at home.  More details are in the letter that was in the Thursday folder. This is an exciting time as we learn to research!!!

Valentine's Day Party
On February 14, we will have our Valentine's Day party.  You student will have a class list today in their blue homework folder.  If your student would like to make Valentines for their classmates, that would be great!  I do ask that if your child participates, he/she gives a Valentine to each student in the class.  I do not want anyone to feel left out.  If your student decides not to participate in giving Valentines, that's OK, too.  We will have a small party at the end of the day.  We will exchange cards, have a small snack, and, if time allows, play a game of Valentine Bingo.  We will need only a few parents to help with this party.

News from RRISD Board
The 2017-2018 academic calendar  for Round Rock ISD was published for community input on January 20.  The Board of Trustees will review feedback and could approve the calendar at their February 16 meeting.  The draft features a slightly longer school day, with the school year ending for students before Memorial Day, 2018.  Please review the calendar carefully.  Winter break begins in the middle of the week, there is no break for students or staff in April or May.  You can click on the link above and view the calendar and give input.

Coyote Call
Just in case you don't receive emails regarding our Coyote Call Newsletter, here is the link -- Coyote Call. The newsletter contains important information about things happening at Forest Creek.

Electronic Handouts
This is the link needed to access electronic handouts -- PeachJar. You can also find this link on the school's website.

Walk to Read Event

Tomorrow(1/20), we will have our Walk to Read Event. This helps to support Trudy Marshall, who is a former RRRISD librarian. She created 36 libraries in Uganda and is working on 7 libraries in Kenya. We use this event to collect books and money. Walking helps our students see what it is like for many kids around the world to walk a long way to school.

The entire school will walk around a course that we set up on the playground/track, returning to classrooms at 2:00 pm

Each child will walk while holding a hard cover book (new or gently used).  Our goal is to have each child bring in a book to donate to Libraries of Love.

We have asked a group of parent volunteers to help direct classes around the fields. At 1:55, a whistle will sound. When this happens, we will all stop and read for about five minutes.  At the next whistle, we will walk back to class and leave the books for donation outside of the classroom in the hallway for fourth graders to pick up.

Families are also welcome to come and walk with their child's class.

Please help support libraries in Kenya.
